2027 Linguistics Institute - Request for Host Institution Proposals


The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) invites universities or research institutions to submit proposals to host the 2027 Linguistic Institute, one of the most celebrated traditions in the field of linguistics. 

Held every two years, the Institute offers a four- to five-week program of courses, workshops, and lectures designed to advance linguistic scholarship, teaching, and community.  

 The 2025 institute was themed “Language in Use” and was held at the University of Oregon from July 7 – August 8, 2025. We encourage prospective 2027 hosts to review this and General Information about the Linguistic Institute when developing their proposals. 
 

About the Institute 

 Since 1928, the Linguistic Institute has served as a cornerstone of the LSA’s mission to promote the scientific study of language. Each Institute provides: 

  • Short courses across all areas of linguistics 
  • Lectures and workshops led by distinguished scholars 
  • Opportunities for networking, mentorship, and collaboration 
  • A welcoming environment for students and early-career researchers 

Host Institution Responsibilities 

 Prospective hosts should demonstrate their ability to provide: 

  • Academic leadership through one or more faculty Co-Directors who will shape the Institute’s theme and curriculum 

  • Adequate facilities including classrooms, housing, and event spaces 

  • Administrative and logistical support for registration, housing, and communications 

  • Financial planning that includes institutional backing and potential fundraising or sponsorships to support scholarships and accessibility 

Institutions are encouraged to propose a theme that reflects current directions in linguistic research and fosters interdisciplinary engagement.  They should also address how they will ensure that content reflecting the full spectrum of the field will be provided. 

LSA Support 

 The LSA provides significant support to the host institution, including: 

  • A planning grant in the year preceding the Institute 

  • Funding and administration of named fellowships and professorships 

  • Promotional and administrative support 

Proposal Guidelines 

 Proposals should be concise and include: 

  1. Proposed theme, dates, and location 

  1. Names and brief bios of proposed Co-Directors 

  1. Overview of facilities and local resources 

  1. Outline of administrative support and staffing 

  1. Preliminary budget and funding plan 

  1. Letter of support from a university official (e.g., Dean or Provost) 

Timeline 

  • Proposals due: March 31, 2026 

  • Selection announced: Summer 2026
