The Linguistic Society is a non-profit organization exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The LSA Federal Identification Number is 74-6043371. As a non-profit organization, the LSA may qualify for corporate donation-matching programs.

Charitable donations to the LSA are tax-deductible for those filing returns in the US to the extent permissible by law.

  • For single contributions of $10,000 or more, donors may wish to specify a purpose for the gift other than one of the established contribution funds. Please consult the Executive Director for further information.  
  • The LSA retains two percent (2%) of all charitable contributions made for restricted purposes in order to cover its administrative costs.

Linguistic Legacy Fund

Purpose
The purpose of the Fund is to support the long-term financial sustainability of the LSA so it may continue to fulfill its mission in perpetuity.

Nature of the Fund

Initial Donor Restricted Operating Reserve Fund Status
Until the Fund reaches the Endowment Threshold (as defined below), the Fund shall be maintained as a donor restricted reserve fund of the LSA. The Executive Committee, in its prudent discretion and consistent with its fiduciary duties, may authorize withdrawals from the Fund to support the obligations, programs, or operational needs of the LSA, including day-to-day operating expenses, to the extent such expenses exceed operating revenues.

Conversion to Perpetual Endowment

Once the total fair market value of the Fund equals or exceeds $1,000,000 (the “Endowment Threshold”), as determined in accordance with the Organization’s standard valuation policies, the Fund shall automatically convert to a perpetual endowment fund. Upon such conversion, and subject to applicable law, including prudent spending requirements, the principal of the Fund shall be maintained in perpetuity, and only amounts appropriated pursuant to the Organization’s endowment spending policy may be expended. Appropriated amounts will be used to support and advance the mission of the LSA.
