When Linguistics is on the Chopping Block: Demonstrating Departmental Value in the Face of External Threats
Our current higher education environment is one in which threats to degree programs come in myriad forms and from unexpected sources. Departments in the humanities and social sciences are frequent targets as students turn increasingly towards majors that provide accessible career pathways in STEM. College administrators often point to declining enrollments as justification for axing programs. What are productive ways to respond to a situation in which your department is threatened with closure? The ideas and suggestions in this document are not exhaustive.
