Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track, Linguistics (Hispanic Linguistics or Sociolinguistics)
The Linguistics Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Linguistics, to begin in the Fall of 2025. We are seeking applicants who specialize in Hispanic Linguistics or Sociolinguistics, or a combination thereof (for example, a sociolinguist specializing in the Spanish-speaking world or languages in contact with Spanish).
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an outstanding research and teaching agenda. Preference will be given to candidates with: a record of published scholarship, evidence of excellence in teaching and student mentoring experience, the potential to seek external research funding, and a willingness to provide service at the departmental and university level, and the discipline.
We especially welcome applications from candidates whose work aligns with our departmental mission as outlined on our website, and candidates whose research and teaching agendas complement those of the current departmental faculty.
Essential Functions: The selected candidate will be expected to teach 2 courses per semester, publish actively, and offer service to the Department and University. Teaching will include lower-level and upper-level undergraduate linguistics courses, the latter typically comprising a mix of undergraduate and graduate students. Mentoring will likely include students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, with independent research, Honors Thesis research, MA Thesis research, and potentially PhD Thesis research as part of the Dual Graduate Track in Hispanic Linguistics (see below).
About the Linguistics Department: We teach courses in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, formal theoretical approaches, computational linguistics, language acquisition, linguistic anthropology, writing systems, sociolinguistics, and more. We offer an Undergraduate Major and Minor, an MA in Linguistics, a Graduate Certificate in Computational Linguistics, and the opportunity for students to pursue a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics in conjunction with Romance Studies (Dual Graduate Track in Hispanic Linguistics, https://go.unc.edu/hisplinggrad).
Please submit the following materials by November 1, 2024 (11:59pm EDT): Cover letter, CV, statement of research interests, statement of teaching, at most 3 representative publications or manuscripts, and at least 4 letters of reference.
