The gender question: Demographics in Linguistics Research: The Sex/Gender Question
Presenters: Lal Zimman, Cooper Bedin, Montreal Benesch, Marina Zhukova
This webinar is co-sponsored by the Committee on Gender Equity in Linguistics (COGEL)
As ideas about sex and gender change, there is increasing need for guidance and best practices regarding how linguists collect and process information about these aspects of identity. Based on a workshop presented at the LSA Annual Meeting in 2024, this webinar presents a series of short discussions of why linguists need new methods and how we might get there as a discipline. We discuss the results of a survey of current norms in the field, summarize problems with traditional methods, offer principles that should inform project-specific approaches to sex/gender, and address the importance of the body in certain types of linguistic research (e.g., phonetics). Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the past, present, and potential future for the operationalization of sex and gender in linguistics and with practical tools that can be shared with students and colleagues.
