Open Linguistics Beyond Academic SIG Meeting: Updates & Events

Since 2010, the LBA SIG has worked to support linguists in career transition - from degree program to fulfilling employment or from a career in one sector to a career in another. The SIG offers regular programming at the annual LSA meetings including the Annual Career Mixer and an open meeting to all LSA members; it created the Linguistics Career Launch; and served as an incubator for the Linguistics Careercast podcast, the only podcast centering the stories of linguists working in business, government, nonprofit and tech.
At the time of the LSA SIG's creation, most academic linguists regarded the 'natural' outcome of a linguistics PhD to be a tenure-line academic position. Today there is active interest within the linguistics community in learning about employment "beyond" academia and increased acknowledgment that such employment is not only the reality for many linguistics students but, more importantly, that it offers value, for the individual, the linguistics community and employers.
This webinar will provide a brief overview of what's been accomplished with a focus on envisioning the future with new leadership and events. Your ideas and leadership are welcome as we head into the Annual Meeting in New Orleans!
