Secretary-Treasurer Search

The LSA is seeking its next Secretary-Treasurer, who will serve for a five-year term (2027-2031). Members of the Society who may wish to be considered or have questions about the position are invited to contact the Executive Director (Margaret Vitullo) or the current Secretary-Treasurer (Frederick Newmeyer) as soon as possible. The deadline for submitting applications is March 16, 2026.

Position Description

The Secretary-Treasurer is an Officer of the Society, and serves as a voting member of the Executive Committee. The incoming Secretary-Treasurer will play a key role as the LSA works to identify a path to a solid financial future, and will collaborate closely with the Officers, At-large members of the Executive Committee, and Executive Director to identify new revenue streams, reduce expenses, and prudently manage the Society’s investments. 

Duties

  • Meets regularly with the Executive Director (generally monthly)
  • Participates in monthly Officers meetings
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director in developing the annual budget
  • Reviews quarterly financials and other financial documents
  • Conducts the annual review of the Executive Director
  • Reports to the membership during the annual Business Meeting 

The Secretary-Treasurer is nominated by the Executive Committee for election by the membership. 
 

Qualifications

Secretary-Treasurers are typically well-established scholars and long term members of the LSA who have experience with financial oversight, including budgeting, monitoring expenses and revenues, and investments. Relevant experience may include serving in an administrative position for an institution of higher education, large program or department, managing multi-year grants, or serving in a variety of roles within industry, non-profits, or government. The Secretary-Treasurer works in close collaboration with the Executive Director, with the further assistance of LSA’s accountant and investment advisors, and thus does not need to be a finance professional.
