2006 Annual Meeting
The 80th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America will take place at the Hyatt Regency and the Doubletree Hotel, Albuquerque, NM, 5-8 January 2006.
Hyatt and Doubletree Hotels in Albuquerque are sold out. |
Members who have not yet made hotel reservations for the Annual Meeting can still reserve rooms at the Plaza Inn, 900 Medical Arts Avenue, N.E. Those attending the Annual Meeting are eligible for special room rates of $69/night single or double occupancy and $79/night for triple or quad occupancy. This rate includes complimentary airport shuttle and transportation to the Convention Center/Hyatt. A complimentary continental breakfast is served each morning. The hotel amenities include an indoor/outdoor heated spas, a fitness room, and complimentary high speed internet access and voice mail. The reservation numbers are 505-243-5693/800-237-1307. To get these special room rates, you must mention that you will be attending the LSA meeting.
The American Dialect Society, the American Name Society, the North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences, the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics, and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas will meet concurrently with the LSA.
Registration
Everyone attending the meeting is expected to register. Compliance is important for keeping our fees affordable. Only whose who register will be allowed to present papers, use the Job Placement Service, or attend plenary presentations.
Note: On-line registration for the Annual Meeting closes on December 23, 2005.
Advance Registration: Only LSA members may register in advance. Members planning to attend may preregister when they renew their membership for 2006 or by sending the preregistration tearout (see center insert) or a photocopy with a check for registration by 5 December 2005. Preregistrations with credit card payment may be faxed to: (202) 835-1717. The Secretariat strongly urges you to preregister by 5 December but will, in any case, stop accepting preregistrations on 16 December. This step has been necessitated by the enormous flow of preregistrations received the last few days before the meeting. Preregistration fees for the 2006 Annual Meeting are:
| Regular Members: | $100.00 |
| Emeritus Members: | $75.00 |
| Student Members: | $40.00 |
| Unemployed Members: | $40.00 |
All preregistrations received after 16 December will be returned following the meeting, and individuals will have to register at the meeting. Preregistrants may claim their badges and handbooks at the registration desk in the meeting area of the hotel beginning at 11:00 AM on 5 January.
Requests for refunds of preregistration fees cannot be honored. Registrants who are unable to attend the meeting will, however, be sent an Annual Meeting Handbook in late January.
Registration will open at 11:00 AM on 5 January and will be open all day 6 and 7 January. The on-site registration fees for the 2006 Annual Meeting are:
| Regular Members: | $125.00 |
| Emeritus Members: | $85.00 |
| Student Members: | $50.00 |
| Unemployed Members: | $50.00 |
| 1-day registration | $65.00 |
Note: Fees may be paid with cash, check, or traveller's cheque. Credit card payments will NOT be accepted for on-site registration under any circumstances.

LSA Meeting Services
Child Care: As in the past, members who notify the Secretariat that they plan to bring children to the meeting will receive a list of sitters recommended by the hotel and convention bureau as well as the names and addresses of the other members who expect to bring their children to Albuquerque. In addition, at the recommendation of the Officers and Executive Committee, the Child Care Assistance Fund will provide a maximum $100.00 stipend to offset child care costs. Parents must meet the following requirements: (1) They are presenters on the LSA program. (2) The caregiver they secure is a graduate student or unemployed linguist. [This person will also receive a complimentary Annual Meeting registration.] (3) The caregiver has agreed to provide child care for no more than two children for 8-12 hours. (4) The parents notify the Secretariat no later than 1 November 2005.
Job Placement: A Job Placement Center will be available as in the past. The fee for listing one or more jobs in the Job Openings List and/or for scheduling interviews is $125. Instructions for remitting the fee will be sent to department and program chairs in mid October. As in the past, interviewers and candidates are required to register for the meeting.
On Friday, 6 January, and Saturday, 7 January, the Job Placement Service will be set up in the Apache Room (CC). It will be open 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM. On Sunday, 8 January, it will move to Board N (HR). The Sunday hours will be 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Lists of openings will be available, and the staff will facilitate interviews between applicants and employers. Interviewers are asked to list openings and check in with the staff so that an interview schedule can be arranged. Applicants should bring an adequate supply of their CV’s—enough to submit one copy to each interviewer. The Job Placement Service will have no duplication facilities.
We hope that the following procedures will enable the Job Placement Service to function effectively.
