- Naomi
Baron (American U) was honored at Buckingham Palace for her book,
Alphabet to email: How written English evolved and where it's heading, one
of three books recognized by the Duke of Edinburgh English Language Book
Award Competition of the English-Speaking Union.
- Sandra
Breitenbach (W WA U) received the 2000 Outstanding Scholars of the
21st Century Award from the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge,
UK.
- Lyle
Campbell (U Canterbury, New Zealand) was awarded the University
of Canterbury Research Medal.
- Shobhana
L. Chelliah (U N TX) was awarded an ACLS fellowship for 2000-2001.
- Charles
Fillmore (UC-Berkeley) received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
degree from the University of Chicago.
- Cecile
McKee (U AZ) has begun a two-year term as Program Director of Linguistics
at the National Science Foundation.
- Elizabeth
C. Traugott (Stanford U) was elected a Fellow of the AAAS.
- Endangered
Language Fund: Alice J. Anderton (U OK), Melissa
Axelrod (U NM), G. Tucker Childs (Portland SU), and
Linda A. Cumberland (IN U) were awarded project grants.
