2003 Annual ReportA. MembershipAs of December 2003, the membership of the Linguistic Society totaled 5751 compared to 5912 active members in December 2002, 6018 in 2001, 5937 in 2000, 5999 in 1999, 6231 in 1998, and 6393 in 1997. The active members include by category: Libraries and Institutions (1819), Honorary (38), Life (362), Regular (2604), Student (797), and Emeritus (16). In addition, 115 institutions throughout the world were receiving the LSA Bulletin and/or Language on an exchange basis. B. DeathsWe are sorry to report the deaths of the following linguists: Ruth Brend, J. Marvin Brown, Russell Campbell, Harmut Czepluch, Naguib Greis, Mary Lu Joynes, Mary Ritchie Key, James Sledd, Ralph L. Ward, and Kenneth Wilson; Life Members Joseph Applegate, Ilah Fleming, Lloyd A. Kasten, and CH van Schoonveld; Honorary Members Franciscus Jacob Kuiper and Eugenius M. Uhlenbeck; and Past President Henry Hoenigswald. C. ElectionsIn 2003, the Nominating Committee (Joseph Aoun, chair) submitted the following slate: Vice President/President-Elect (2004) Mark Aronoff (U Stony Brook-SUNY); members of the Executive Committee: Mark Baker (Rutgers U), Ed Battistella (S OR U), Ellen Kaisse (U WA), and James McCloskey (UC-Santa Cruz). Over 600 ballots were received in the Secretariat by 1 December, and the following members were elected: Vice President/President-Elect: Mark Aronoff; Executive Committee: Mark Baker and Ellen Kaisse. In addition, the Executive Committee nominated: Editor (2004): Brian Joseph (OH SU) and Secretary-Treasurer (2004): Gregory Ward (Northwestern U). Both were elected to office. D. Audit ReportMcMaster and Associates completed its review of the Society's funds through the end of the fiscal year, 30 September 2003.
