To provide consultant services-- preferably by 'telecommuting' via e-mail and Internet-- in natural language processing, information retrieval, and other fields that incorporate linguistic theory into specific computational applications.

 

SELECTED EMPLOYMENT

 

Linguistic Researcher, International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), Berkeley, California.  August 2000 - June 2003.  Assisted in the development of a computational formalism, "Embodied Construction Grammar", for the description and analysis of conceptual and linguistic structure. My work focused on the syntactic and semantic representation of core grammatical structures in English and German, especially argument-structure constructions and auxiliary verbs.

 

Web Designer and Manager, Linguistic Enterprises.  September - December 2002.  Re-designed and maintained the website of Linguistic Enterprises, a project of the Linguistic Society of America dedicated to helping academically-trained linguists find employment outside of academia. Metaphor & Analogy Consultant, goggleworks.com, San Francisco CA.  October 2000 - March 2001.  Performed analysis of metaphors and analogies for basic science concepts, in support of the development of educational software for middle- and high-school students.  General consulting and advice in the field of metaphor theory.

Linguistic Researcher, SRI International, Menlo Park CA.  July - August 2000.  Investigated the use of metaphor and analogy in the understanding of scientific concepts.

Programmer, FoneFriend Systems Inc., New Paltz NY.  November 1997 - July 1998.  Developed UNIX-based server applications (in C++) in support of an Internet telephony product; UNIX / X-Windows applications (with GUI) for testing these servers; and other software.

 

Research Assistant / Programmer, New Paltz Interprocedural Compiler (NPIC) project, State University of  New York (SUNY) at New Paltz.  October 1997 - July 1998.  Assisted in the development of an  experimental interprocedural optimizing compiler.
