Hi, my name is David Pimental. I graduated from Ohio State with a B.A. in Linguistics in 1996, where I worked for the department of linguistics studying phonetics in vowel normalization and speaker variance, and worked in the department of psychology studying the Buckeye Corpus of spoken english for phonetic, lexical and syllabic variances.

Since then I have mostly stuck to programming jobs, only occasionally being able to make use of my linguistic experience. I am good with Perl, Java and know databases inside and out.

What I am looking for is a good fit between my programming skills and my linguistic experiences. While I would love to go to graduate school (I have been entertaining the idea recently), I don't know that it will happen.

Anybody have any leads on Language related research, especially in the area of textual research or Text Mining?

Let me know. You can email me at mailto:dpimental@juno.com

Hi, I am seeking to find some sort of general salary scale or comparison scale for translator positions in the intelligence arena -- specifically average salaries paid by gov't contractors who translate somewhat OBSCURE languages. Any advice on where I could ferret out some informtion whether it does or doesn't have the names of the contractors and what they pay. And the criteria by which they would determine the exact amount they would offer to a "newcomer" to this field.

I realize this is somewhat general information but haven't found it. The Bureau of Labor's scale is somewhat general and does not seem to factor in the obscurity of the language or if they are intelligence (clearance) jobs.
thanks,
Frances

I am Balaram Prasain, a lecturer at the central Department of Linguistics, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Nepal. I have completed MA in Linguistics. I attended the linguistic Institute 2001 at UCSB and successfully completed with 4.0 GPA. And I want to do MA/Ph.D. in general linguistics from US universities. But the problem is finance. If I can get any fellowship to do so, how can I get ?

Thanks

Hello fellow linguists in search of answers. I have only recently found this forum and noticed the last posted message was nearly 1 year ago. Is anyone using this board anymore? If you are intersted in beginning a discussion please follow. My name is Garnet Brooks, I have a masters degree in Applied Linguistics, almost (2 months to go). I am very interested in finding employment in the private sector, although my university position pays bills, barely, it is not challenging enough for me. I love living in Asia, and wish to continue in this field, but want a job that will push me to use what I have learned, and further demand I continue to learn. I do some translating, Korean- English and I am quite intested in many other aspects.

I propose we start a discussion on what types of jobs are available to young linguists. Any one with ideas or resources please post them, if you don't mind sharing. Also anyone with questions, ask them so we can all become more aware of the issues we need to in order to find reward in the field we chose. For starters I think this site is a great resource, especially the mentoring program, I will now go look for a mentor!

cheers,

Garnet

Hi. My name is Meghavi and I graduated with a B.A. in Linguistics last May. I have taken the year off. As much as I would love to teach in Sociolinguistics/Cognitive Science, money is unfortunately an issue b/c who knows if I'll get a job in academia. Next to Socioling, I guess you could say that I love Phonetics. So I guess, Computational Linguistics has sparked interst. My main interest in non-native speech and voice recognition is something I'd like to get intol. All I know is I'm lost at finding a program.I want to go for a PhD. Any advice? What kind of program? Could I just get a PhD in LIng and take CS classes too?Any advice on the training would help tons! Thanks. -Meghavi
