Dictionary Society of North America

The Dictionary Society is again offering the Laurence Urdang DSNA Award for the support of lexicographic research.  Funded by member Laurence Urdang, the award will support one or more lexicographic projects with awards between $500 and $2,500.  Applicants must be current members of the DSNA.  The budget may include costs of travel, tuition, materials, subsistence, and related expenses.  The proposal should include: (1) project name; (2) applicant's name and address; (3) statement of the immediate goals and expected long-range results of the project; (4) description of the methodology or procedures to be used; (5) summary budget of total expenses for the project; (6) other sources of support available for the project; and (7); a one-page biographical resume of the applicant.  It should total no more than three pages single-spaced, including the one-page resume.  Send proposals with a self-addressed, stamped postcard for acknowledgement to:  Richard W. Dissertation Fellowships

In 2002, dissertation fellowships for archival research in the humanities will become available from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  The program will be called the Mellon Fellowship Program for Dissertation Research in Original Sources.  The fellowships will provide encouragement and opportunities for graduate students in any field in the humanities to do dissertation research in original source materials.  Archives, libraries, and other repositories of research materials will be asked to work with CLIR to provide special assistance to dissertation fellows who choose to use their collections.  Fellowships will be granted for periods of one year; some may be awarded for research abroad.  For further information, contact:  CLIR, 1755 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Ste 500, Washington, DC 20036-2124; (202) 939-4750; fax:  (202) 939-4765; info@clir.org; http://www.clir.org.

Fulbright Scholar Program

The Fulbright program is offering lecturing/research awards in 140 countries for the 2002-03 academic year.  Traditional awards are available from two months to an academic year or longer.  A new short-term grants program--the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program--offers two- to six-week grants in a variety of disciplines and fields.  Deadlines for 2002-03 awards are: 1 August 2001 (traditional lecturing and research grants), 1 November 2001 (spring/summer seminars in Germany/Korea/Japan for international educators and academic administrators; for summer German Studies Seminar).  The Senior Specialist Program has rolling deadlines.  Contact:  Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), 3007 Tilden St., NW, Ste 5L, Washington, DC 20008-3009; (202) 686-7877; fax:  (202) 362-3442; apprequest@cies.iie.org; http://www.cies.org.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships
