Copyright and the Cultural Community

During 2001, the National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage (NINCH), of which the Society is a member, is sponsoring a series of town meetings on various aspects of copyright and fair use.  The first two meetings were in Chicago (3 March) and Houston (25 April).  Others are scheduled for Denver (28 June), New York (24 September), Cincinnati (27 October), and Eugene (19 November).  For more information, check: http://www.ninch.org/copyright/townmeetings/2001.html.)

Decade of Behavior

As part of its school outreach efforts, the Decade of Behavior has established 15-19 October 2001 as 'Exploring Behavior Week'.  The American Psychological Association has prepared a brochure with suggestions on how to involve K-12 students in psychological science that may spark some ideas for those who wish to bring linguistics into the K-12 environment.  A presentation template and instruction booklet are on the web at: apa.org/science/ebw.html.  For more information, contact: science@apa.org.

The Foreign Language Requirement

The Letters and Sciences Executive Committee at UC-Berkeley has unanimously approved ASL as a fulfillment of the undergraduate language requirement for graduation.  As soon as the procedures for certifying proficiency are in place, students will be able to use ASL to fulfill their language requirement.

NEH Summer Stipends Program

New CASBS Associate Director

Mark Turner, professor of English language and literature and a member of the faculty of the doctoral program in neuroscience and cognitive sciences at U MD-College Park, will become associate director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, effective 1 January 2002.  He will succeed Robert A. Scott, who is retiring after 18 years of services as associate director.

Poetry by Linguists

A volume of poetry by linguists is being prepared.  Individuals may submit poems and/or translations of poems (up to ten pieces total) with a brief biography and a statement (up to 500 words) on links between work as a linguist and the writing of poetry to: Andrew Sunshine, 222 W. 83rd St., #9E, New York, NY 10024; sonsign@jps.net.  The deadline is 1 October 2001.  Work submitted in languages other than English should be accompanied by both literal and poetic translations.

Semantics Website

Semanticsarchive.net, a website for exchanging papers on natural language semantics and related topics, welcomes papers by semanticists from all theoretical perspectives, and at all levels, from senior researchers to graduate students.  At present, the archive contains more than 60 papers by more than 30 different authors as well as links to semantics resources on the web.  The archive interface emphasizes simplicity in order to make searching, browsing, uploading, and downloading as easy as possible.  Papers are accepted in a wide variety of file formats.  For further information see: http://semanticsarchive.net
