LSA Student Fellowship Application

Please read the following eligibility requirements and application procedures carefully before completing the application form.

Fellowships are intended for LSA members who are undergraduate and graduate students. Individuals holding a PhD degree are not eligible for student fellowships. Students who will have completed their dissertation before the program will have lowest priority for fellowships.
Applicants should understand that funds available for fellowships are extremely limited. Fellowship awardees are most likely to receive grants limited to tuition and some travel.
Fellowship awardees are expected to attend and participate in the full three weeks of activities.
Information supplied on the application must be typewritten or printed in black ink.
Applicants should keep in mind that careful consideration will be given by the committee to their applications; the statement of goals and letter of recommendation are especially important.

The following materials should be on file by 11 February 2002 (NOT postmarked 11 February 2002). NOTE: Post office delivery is erratic. Allow sufficient time for delivery delays; priority mail service often takes more than two days. All applications, letters, and supporting documentation must arrive by the deadline. Late materials will not be considered, whatever the reason for the delay. No email or fax materials will be accepted:

Completed Fellowship Application Form;
LSA membership dues if not already a member for 2002 ($25/US address; $35/non-US address);
Transcripts from the last two years of college or university work;
Two Letters of Recommendation from individuals familiar with your work. Applicants are urged to provide the recommenders with a copy of the recommendation form. Letters are taken seriously and should be requested early. It is your responsibility to ensure that letters are sent on time; letters received via electronic mail or facsimile or after the deadline will not be accepted.

Recommendations are taken seriously by the Review Committee, so you are urged to respond promptly. Failure to send your report on time could disqualify the applicant from consideration. It will be helpful to the committee if you will include in your comments your estimate of the importance of the applicant's attending, and of the appropriateness of this particular program to the applicant's training. The more specific your comments, the more useful they will be to the committee. Please rank the applicant with respect to other students you have encountered at the same level of linguistic training, indicating explicitly the intended comparison class. If you are preparing recommendations for more than one applicant, it would be helpful to the committee to have these applications rank ordered. If you choose to write the recommendation on a separate sheet of paper, please make certain that you sign and date the sheet. In any case, your letter must be no longer than one side of one sheet. To protect both the applicant and the recommender, letters of recommendation sent by electronic mail or facsimile will not be accepted.
