Note: Only current LSA student members may apply for an Institute fellowship, and all applications must be submitted on-line. The Online application will be available to student members of the LSA beginning in January of 2011. If you are not currently a student member of the LSA and would like to join, please click here. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of the applicant's overall academic performance and promise, as well as the expected role of the Institute in contributing to the applicant's graduate or undergraduate studies and future plans. Preference for fellowships is given to applicants who have not previously received an LSA Fellowship.

All applicants who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the U.S. must submit GRE scores, unless they are unavailable because this program did not require GRE scores for admission. If your scores are less than 5 years old, an official GRE score report is required. If your scores are more than 5 years old, an unofficial (photocopied) GRE score report is acceptable. For applicants who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Masters program in the U.S., or for applicants enrolled in a graduate program outside the U.S., GRE scores are not required, but if they are available, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit them (officially or unofficially). Non-native speakers of English who have not completed a degree at an English-speaking institution must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

VI. Named Fellowships

A. Bloch Fellowship

Applicants must be graduate students at North American universities who do not expect to receive the PhD. before June 2013. This award requires the recipient to serve on the LSA Executive Committee for a term of two years, and to Chair the LSA Committee on Student Issues and Concerns, also for a term of two years. This service involves a considerable time commitment. In recognition of this service, the Bloch award covers all travel and rooming expenses associated with attendance at the Institute and LSA Annual Meetings.

B. Dictionary Society of North America Fellowship

This fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Dictionary Society of North America. The awardee must enroll in LING 7800-011, "Defining English for Global Consumers: A Course in Practical Lexicography.
